Maths

At The Federation of Netley Abbey Infant and Junior Schools, we teach mathematics through a Teaching for Mastery approach, following the latest guidance from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and evidence-informed practice promoted by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).

We believe that all children can succeed in mathematics and focus on developing deep conceptual understanding, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. Learning is carefully sequenced into small, connected steps, using concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract methods (CPA) to build secure understanding.

Children are encouraged to explain their thinking using precise mathematical language, make connections between mathematical ideas and develop rapid recall of key number facts through regular practice. By building strong foundations in number and mathematical thinking, we aim to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who can apply their learning flexibly and successfully in a range of contexts.
