Reading
We are committed to developing confident, fluent and thoughtful readers who enjoy reading and understand its importance in every aspect of life. Our reading curriculum is informed by the evidence-based research of Christopher Such, recognising that skilled reading requires both secure word reading and strong language comprehension. Through exposure to a wide range of high-quality texts, pupils develop their vocabulary, broaden their knowledge of the world and deepen their understanding of different themes, perspectives and cultures.
We use the VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summarising) to teach comprehension explicitly, helping pupils think critically about what they read and engage with increasingly complex texts. Oracy is embedded throughout reading lessons, with pupils encouraged to discuss, debate and justify their ideas using precise language and evidence from the text. Through reading across the curriculum, children learn to make connections, evaluate information and develop a lifelong love of reading. This ensures that pupils become confident, reflective readers who are well prepared for future learning and equipped to achieve Excellence Every Day.
